In August 2025, we were visiting Koh Phangan. On the 5th, I disappeared into the jungle hills above Chaloklum, seeking a secluded spot I had heard about, and had later searched for on Google Maps. After the arduous bike climb and vertical hike, I found myself alone in a jungle speakeasy, surrounded by ashtrays, beer bottles and complete solitude. I sat in a faded plastic deckchair, gazed out at the infinite view. I took two photos with my Canon EOS500 loaded with Kodak Colorplus, and in my time up there also composed two poems, one of which I shall share now…

Khao Ko Viewpoint – 05/08/25
From above, I can see jungle crows dart around
Coconut palms, so free, black on wings making sound.
Down below, far away, turquoise blue, infinite,
An ocean framed by land up above, where I sit.
It’s as if, before me, a painting manifests
Holding me by me feet and eyes to its behests.
Blue and green peppered with rainbow ants, Chaloklum,
Tiny houses, marble boats, idle beneath my thumb.
With our eyes, we barely see enough to soak in
Memories, except when our eyes stop to listen.
